Raising the Bar in Sports Medicine

healthcare_2013_coverSports medicine is a specialised branch of medical practice focused on the treatment of sports‐related injuries. It emerged as a distinct entity in modern healthcare in the late 20th century when the boundaries and benchmarks of modern sports were being pushed higher and wider. Athletes continue to push their bodies to greater limits and endure higher physical stresses, which leaves them vulnerable to injuries. Loss of performance and training time can adversely affect an athlete’s career – or even end it.

Heeding this need, the Kuala Lumpur Sports Medicine Centre (KLSMC) was set up in 2005 as a one‐stop centre for treatment of musculo‐skeletal injuries. It provides an integrated service which includes consultation, physiotherapy and surgery. KLSMC’s very modern facilities extend to medical imaging, surgical wards, a pharmacy, physiotherapy rooms and a hydrotherapy pool.

A holistic & Customised Approach to Sports Medicine

Being in the vanguard of sports medicine in the country, KLSMC provides a truly holistic and customised approach towards treating every patient that walks through its door. This stems from the understanding that every patient is unique and no two patients’ conditions are the same. With this vision, the centre takes pride in the ability to customise its treatment regimes for individual patients. This enables patients to resume an active lifestyle in the most effective way possible.

Through the effective and efficient integration of its practices, the centre is able to speedily provide care for its patients. Waiting time for patients is significantly reduced with same‐day MRI diagnosis by individual specialists from every sub‐specialty area of the musculoskeletal system.

Cutting-Edge Technology in a Contemporary Setting

KLSMC features some of the leading facilities and equipment available today in order to provide truly enhanced services to patients. With a keen understanding that effective treatment goes beyond the doctorpatient relationship and extends into every aspect of treatment, the centre invests in facilities to provide the best service possible to patients.

This includes an open MRI system which provides a less claustrophobic experience compared to traditional closed MRI machines. In many instances, especially in sports medicine, patients also often require their extremities scanned. This is made possible at KLSMC with the latest extremity MRI, which produces high‐quality images with fast scan times in a comfortable sitting position.
