Objective

To develop and assess a novel regenerative approach using autologous peripheral blood-derived cells (PBSCs), combined with hyaluronic acid (HA), to repair severe cartilage damage in the knee joint—particularly in patients who would otherwise face limited surgical options.

Results

  • The method, known as K.A.R.T.® (KLSMC Articular Regeneration Technology), combines arthroscopic subchondral drilling with postoperative intra-articular injections of PBSCs and HA.
  • In a multi-centre randomised controlled trial, patients who received this regenerative treatment showed statistically significant improvements in knee pain, function (via IKDC and KOOS scores), and cartilage repair (assessed through MRI and MOCART scoring).
  • Over 70% of patients with large cartilage defects demonstrated meaningful clinical improvements, with no reported adverse events.

Conclusion

This regenerative strategy represents a promising alternative to invasive procedures like joint replacement for patients with substantial knee cartilage damage. It leverages the body’s own repair mechanisms through autologous blood-derived cell injections and offers a safer, biologically based solution for joint preservation and recovery. The team plans to advance to a Phase 3 trial, with the vision of making this the standard of care in future orthopaedic practice.
