Dr. TAY Yong Guan hails from Muar, Johor and obtained his medical degree from the University of Malaya Medical School, Kuala Lumpur in 1989. After three years as a medical officer, he went back to pursue his Masters in Orthopaedic Surgery and obtained his Fellowship from the College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (FRCS) in 1994.
From 1997 to 2000, he worked as a lecturer and orthopaedic surgeon at the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, University of Malaya Medical Centre. He advanced his training in knee and shoulder surgery at various institutes in North America and completed a course in advanced arthroscopy at the famed Steadman and Hawkins Clinic in Vail, Colorado in August 1997. He then underwent a two-month attachment with Dr. David A McGuire, a dedicated knee arthroscopist and panel expert at the Arthroscopy Association of North America (AANA).
In May 1998, Dr. TAY served as an AO International Fellow at the Sunnybrook Health Science Centre, Toronto, under the supervision of Professor Joseph Schatzker and later Dr. Anthony Miniachi, a dedicated shoulder arthroscopic surgeon. In 2003, he visited Dr. Joe De Beer at the Cape Shoulder Institute where he witnessed the treatment of South Africa’s national rugby players, the Springboks.
In 2000 Dr. TAY left university practice and started his private practice at Gleneagles Intan Medical Centre. He specializes in various kinds of surgery for the knee, from minimal invasive surgery (arthroscopy) to more complex multiple ligament reconstructions as well as open surgery i.e. Total Knee Replacements. His current interest is in the treatment of articular injury of the knee. Dr. TAY is an active member of numerous Malaysian orthopaedic and medical associations and an affiliated member of the American Association of Orthopaedic Surgery (AAOS). He also works closely with many sporting bodies like the National Sports Council and the COBRA rugby team. In his leisure time, he plays competitive squash, tennis and badminton. He also enjoys golf and alpine skiing.
