Ultrasound Scan

What is an Ultrasound Scan?

Ultrasound, or sonography, is a non-invasive imaging technique that uses high frequency sound waves to produce real-time images of the inside of our body.

When Do You Need an Ultrasound Scan?

An ultrasound scan may be recommended when you have symptoms that require a closer look at the body’s internal structures without the use of radiation. It is often used to investigate unexplained symptoms, assess soft tissues and organs, and help doctors make accurate diagnosis.

You may need an ultrasound scan if you are experiencing:

  • Pain or discomfort in the abdomen, pelvis, joints, or soft tissues
  • Swelling or inflammation in a specific area of the body
  • Lumps or abnormal masses in areas such as the breast, thyroid, or soft tissue
  • Thyroid concerns, including enlargement or suspected nodules
  • Abdominal discomfort, bloating, or suspected organ-related issues
  • Symptoms that may suggest a blood clot or other vascular condition
  • Soft tissue injuries involving muscles, tendons, or ligaments

Because ultrasound provides real-time imaging and does not use radiation, it is often one of the first scans used to evaluate symptoms and guide the next steps in care.

Benefits of Ultrasound

The benefits of having an ultrasound scan includes the followings:

  • No ionizing radiation
    • Unlike x-rays or CT scans, ultrasound uses sound waves, not radiation.
    • This makes it safe for everyone, including pregnant women and children, as well as for repeated use when monitoring chronic conditions.
    • The scan process is generally comfortable and causes no pain.
  • Real-time imaging
    • Ultrasound provide live-images, which are useful for observing moving organs, for example blood flow in vessels.
    • It is especially helpful during procedures, such as biopsies or fluid drainage, where precise targeting is required.

Types of Ultrasound Scans Available

The ultrasound services provided by KLSMC Hospital are as follow:

  • Musculoskeletal ultrasound
    • To assess muscles, tendons, ligaments, joints, and soft-tissues.
    • For detecting tendon tears, muscle injuries, bursitis and joint abnormalities.
  • Vascular ultrasound
    • To examine blood flow in arteries and veins.
    • For detecting blood clots (deep vein thrombosis), varicose veins, arterial blockages and aneurysm.
  • Neck / thyroid ultrasound
    • To assess the thyroid gland and nearby structures.
    • For evaluating thyroid nodules, goiter, lymph nodes and parathyroid abnormalities.
  • Breast ultrasound
    • To examine breast tissues.
    • For detecting breast lumps or abnormalities found during a mammogram.
  • Abdominal and pelvic ultrasound
    • To evaluate organs such as the liver, gallbladder, kidneys, pancreas and pelvic organs.
    • For detecting gallstones, liver disease, kidney stones, abdominal masses or fluid collection.
  • Ultrasound-Guided procedures
    • Increase the accuracy and safety of minimally invasive procedures.

Ultrasound Scan Procedure

Before the Scan

Preparation for an ultrasound scan depends on the area being examined. Some scans may require fasting for a few hours, while others, such as certain pelvic scans, may require a full bladder. You will be advised on any specific preparation before your appointment.

During the Scan

During the procedure, a gel will be applied to the skin over the area being examined. A handheld device called a transducer will then be moved gently across the skin to capture real-time images. The scan is usually painless, although mild pressure may be felt in some cases.

After the Scan

Most ultrasound scans take about 15 to 30 minutes, depending on the type of scan. You can return to your normal activities after the scan procedure. Your doctor will review the images and advise on the next steps if needed.

FAQ

An ultrasound scan is used to examine internal organs, soft tissues, and blood flow in real time. It helps doctors detect abnormalities, investigate symptoms, and guide diagnosis or treatment without using radiation.

Ultrasound can help detect or assess a range of conditions, depending on the body area being examined. These may include gallstones, kidney stones, cysts, lumps, thyroid nodules, uterine fibroids, breast masses, soft tissue injuries, and blood clots. It is also commonly used to look for blockages, growths, and structural abnormalities in organs, glands, and blood vessels.

Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing that allows easy access to the area being examined. You may also be asked to remove jewellery or change into a gown if needed.

Whether you can eat or drink before an ultrasound scan depends on the type of scan. Some may require fasting, while others may require a full bladder. You will be advised on any specific preparation before your appointment.

Diagnostic ultrasound scans are generally very safe and have no known side effects. The sound waves used are considered safe and, unlike X-rays or CT scans, ultrasound does not use radiation. Some people may feel mild discomfort if the probe is pressed over a tender area, but this usually passes quickly.
