Introduction

Ultrasound, or sonography, is a non-invasive imaging technique that uses high frequency sound waves to produce real-time images of the inside of our body.

No ionizing radiation
- Unlike x-rays or CT scans, ultrasound uses sound waves, not radiation.
- This makes it safe for everyone, including pregnant women and children, as well as for repeated use when monitoring chronic conditions.
- The scan process is generally comfortable and causes no pain.
Real-time imaging
- Ultrasound provide live-images, which are useful for observing moving organs, for example blood flow in vessels.
- It is especially helpful during procedures, such as biopsies or fluid drainage, where precise targeting is required.

Musculoskeletal ultrasound
- To assess muscles, tendons, ligaments, joints, and soft-tissues.

Neck / thyroid ultrasound

Breast ultrasound
- To examine breast tissues.
- For detecting breast lumps or abnormalities found during a mammogram.
Abdominal and pelvic ultrasound
- To evaluate organs such as the liver, gallbladder, kidneys, pancreas and pelvic organs.
- For detecting gallstones, liver disease, kidney stones, abdominal masses or fluid collection.
