KUALA LUMPUR: The Kuala Lumpur Sports Medicine Centre (KLSMC) has joined the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) team.

KLSMC, in collaboration with sports medicine clinic, Klinik Setia, has been recognised as the AFC’s first medical centre of excellence in Southeast Asia.

This was announced today in Kuala Lumpur at a ceremony officiated by AFC president Shaikh Salman Ebrahim Al Khalifa.

Also at the event were AFC secretary-general Datuk Windsor Paul John, KLSMC founder and director Saw Khay Yong, renowned sports medicine consultant Datuk Gurcharan Singh, FA of Malaysia president Datuk Hamidin Amin, KLSMC chief executive officer Edmund Ong Thiam Lock and consultant orthopaedic and microsurgeon Ranjit Singh Gill.

AFC President Shaikh Salman bin Ebrahim Al Khalifa, presenting the award to KLSMC Founder and Director, Dr. Saw Kay Yong and renowned Sports Medicine Consultant, Dato’ Dr. Gurcharan Singh with Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) President Dato’ Hamidin Amin.

“The AFC continue to take on a leadership role in the best medical practices. Through the ever-growing network of the AFC medical centre of excellence, we are committed to expanding the scope and access for players to obtain world-class medical attention,” said Shaikh Salman.

Windsor stressed on the importance of KLSMC setting the standards in terms of the criteria required to be named as a centre of excellence in AFC’s books.

KLSMC is a one-stop private specialist hospital for sports injuries with services ranging from orthopaedic surgery, physiotherapy, rehabilitation to hydrotherapy, MRI imaging and counselling. It has served several notable professionals, including three-time Olympic silver medallist Lee Chong Wei.

The AFC medical centre of excellence was launched last year with the goal to reward and recognise medical centres in Asia that demonstrate leadership in clinical, research and education expertise, as well as experience in managing injuries in top-level football.
