After his primary education in Kota Baru, Kelantan, Dr. Merican attended the United World College of South East Asia (UWCSEA) in Singapore. He went on to study medicine in Dublin, Ireland and graduated from the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland in 1985. He returned to Malaysia in 1986 and began training in radiology at the University Hospital Kuala Lumpur in 1989. He obtained a Masters in Medicine (Radiology) from UKM and furthered his training at Queen’s Medical Centre in Nottingham, UK. In 1991, Dr. Merican obtained the Fellowship of the Royal College of Radiologists and served as state radiologist in Brunei from 1994 to 1996.
In 1996 Dr. Merican returned to Kuala Lumpur and worked as a Consultant Radiologist at the Gleneagles Intan Medical Centre. Serving the many orthopaedic surgeons at Gleneagles he developed an interest in musculo-skeletal radiology, a sub-speciality that has grown rapidly in the last ten years due to the maturation of MRI technology and the development of high frequency ultrasound transducers. He has attended many courses, locally and abroad to further this interest and has visited luminaries in the field such as Dr. John Read in Sydney, Australia. He works closely with Dr. Saw and Dr. Tay in the arthroscopic correlation of radiological findings.
