      Dr. ONG is the Consultant Orthopaedic & Trauma Surgeon at KLSMC specializing in hip and spine injuries, and has been in practice for over 20 years. He graduated from the National University of Ireland in 1985 with honours in surgery, anatomy, biochemistry, physiology and pharmacy. From 1986 to 1990, he did his internship in Hospital Kuala Lumpur and Orthopaedic & General Surgical training in University Hospital, Kuala Lumpur. In 1990, he obtained Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons, Edinburgh and then trained in General Orthopaedics in Glasgow Royal Infirmary, Scotland, followed by formal postgraduate Orthopaedic training in Wales and England. He then went for sub-specialized training in Adult Spinal Surgery as well as Joint Replacement Surgery at the Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital, Oswestry, England. Dr. ONG returned to Malaysia in 1994 to become Clinical Orthopaedic Specialist at Hospital Tengku Ampuan Rahimah Hospital, Klang after which he joined the private practice. His present interests are Orthopaedic trauma, joint replacement and adult degenerative spinal disorders.

      Dr. ONG ialah Pakar Bedah Perunding Ortopedik & Trauma di KLSMC. Beliau adalah pakar khusus yang berpengalaman lebih 20 tahun dalam kecederaan pinggul dan tulang belakang. Berkelulusan ijazah kepujian dalam pembedahan, anatomi, biokimia, fisiologi dan farmasi dari National University of Ireland pada 1985, beliau kemudian menjalani internship di Hospital Kuala Lumpur dan latihan Ortopedik & Pembedahan Am di Hospital Universiti, Kuala Lumpur dari 1986 hingga 1990. Pada 1990, beliau memperolehi Fellowship dari Royal College of Surgeons, Edinburgh dan menjalani latihan Ortopedik Am di Glasgow Royal Infirmary, Scotland, diikuti dengan latihan formal lepasan ijazah bidang Ortopedik di Wales dan England. Beliau kemudian menjalani latihan sub-khusus dalam Pembedahan Tulang Belakang Dewasa serta Pembedahan Penggantian Sendi di Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital Oswestry, England. Dr. ONG kembali ke Malaysia pada 1994 dan memegang jawatan Pakar Ortopedik Klinikal di Hospital Tengku Ampuan Rahimah, Klang dan selanjutnya menyertai sektor swasta.       Dr. SAW Khay Yong is the founder and senior partner of Kuala Lumpur Sports Medicine Centre (KLSMC). He was born in Penang and studied medicine at the Liverpool University Medical School from 1979 to 1984. During his general surgical fellowship years, he went through surgical rotation which included general surgery, vascular surgery, plastic surgery and reconstructive surgery together with hand and microsurgery. In 1990, Dr. SAW started his research work on ‘Early mobilization following operative repair of ruptured Achilles tendon’ and published his results in 1993. Since then his work has been recognized in the North West region of England as a newer and better treatment and has been put into practice. In 1993, he completed his Masters in Orthopaedic Surgery (MCH Orth) at Liverpool University Medical School, England. He won the Norah Walker prize for orthopaedic radiology. His thesis was on the ‘Early mobilization following operative repair of ruptured Achilles tendon’. Upon his return to Malaysia in 1994, he became an orthopaedic lecturer at the University Hospital Kuala Lumpur. He started the Sports Clinic at University Hospital and proceeded to develop the field of arthroscopic surgery. From 1994 to 1997, he conducted many courses on trauma based on the principles of AO. From 1996 to 2000, he was in charge of AO education in Malaysia and was also an AO instructor for the advanced course in Davos, Switzerland. He started his private practice in 1997 and moved to the Gleneagles Intan Medical Centre, Kuala Lumpur. In the early days, he practiced general orthopaedics with an interest in sports injury and arthroscopic surgery but now solely on arthroscopic surgery to the knee and shoulder. Dr. SAW’s current practice is 95% arthroscopic surgery to the knee and shoulder. He handles approximately 80 to 100 cases of knee arthroscopic surgery per year, 80 to 100 Anterior Cruciate Ligament reconstruction cases, 30 to 50 shoulder cases and 10 to 20 cases of other surgeries including multi-ligament reconstruction, trauma and various osteotomies around the knee. He is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon to the Football Association of Malaysia and the National Sports Institute. His patient portfolio comprises about 5 to 10% professional athletes, the rest being recreational sportsmen.

      Dr. SAW Khay Yong merupakan pengasas dan rakan kongsi senior di Kuala Lumpur Sports Medicine Centre (KLSMC). Dilahirkan di Pulau Pinang, beliau mendalami bidang perubatan di Liverpool University Medical School dari 1979-1984. Ketika menjalani tempoh fellowship pembedahan am, beliau telah melaksanakan siri pembedahan secara pusingan giliran meliputi pembedahan am, pembedahan vaskular, pembedahan plastik dan pembedahan rekonstruktif serta pembedahan tangan dan mikropembedahan. Pada 1990, Dr. SAW memulakan kerja penyelidikan mengenai ‘Early mobilization following operative repair of ruptured Achilles tendon’ dan berjaya menerbitkan hasil penyelidikan tersebut pada 1993. Semenjak itu, hasil kerja beliau diperakui sebagai kaedah rawatan terbaru dan lebih baik yang terus diguna pakai di wilayah Barat Laut England. Pada 1993, beliau menyempurnakan Masters in Orthopaedic Surgery (MCH Orth) di Liverpool University Medical School, England. Beliau muncul pemenang hadiah Norah Walker kerana kecemerlangn dalam radiologi orthopedik. Tesis penyelidikan bertajuk ‘Early mobilization following operative repair of ruptured Achilles tendon’ itulah yang membantu beliau memenangi hadiah cemerlang tersebut. Setelah kembali ke Malaysia pada 1994, beliau memegang jawatan pensyarah ortopedik di Hospital Universiti Kuala Lumpur. Beliau memulakan Klinik Sukan di Hospital Universiti dan selanjutnya memajukan bidang pembedahan artroskopik. Dari 1994 hingga 1997, beliau mengendalikan pelbagai kursus mengenai asas trauma mengikut prinsip-prinsip AO. Dari 1996 hingga 2000, beliau dipertanggung jawab mempelopori dan mengepalai pendidikan AO di Malaysia serta menjadi jurulatih AO bagi kursus lanjutan di Davos, Switzerland. Beliau beralih ke perkhidmatan swasta apabila menyertai Gleneagles Intan Medical Centre, Kuala Lumpur pada 1997. Ketika awal penglibatan, beliau khusus menjalankan rawatan ortopedik am dengan kecenderungan kepada kecederaan sukan dan pembedahan artroskopik. Kini beliau fokus hanya kepada pembedahan artroskopik lutut dan bahu. Dr. SAW memberi tumpuan penglibatan sebanyak 95 peratus kepada pembedahan artroskopik lutut dan bahu. Purata setahun beliau mengendali antara 80 hingga 100 kes pembedahan artroskopik lutut, 80 hingga 100 kes pembangunan semula ligamen krusiat anterior (Anterior Cruciate Ligament), 30 hingga 50 kes bahu dan 10 hingga 20 kes lain-lain pembedahan termasuk pembangunan semula pelbagai ligamen, trauma dan aneka osteotomi di sekeliling lutut. Beliau adalah Pakar Bedah Ortopedik Perunding dengan Persatuan Bolasepak Malaysia (FAM) dan Institut Sukan Negara. Antara latar belakang para pesakit beliau meliputi 5 hingga 10% atlit profesional, manakala selebihnya adalah ahli sukan rekreasi.

      Dr. TAY Yong Guan hails from Muar, Johor and obtained his medical degree from the University of Malaya Medical School, Kuala Lumpur in 1989. After three years as a medical officer, he went back to pursue his Masters in Orthopaedic Surgery and obtained his Fellowship from the College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (FRCS) in 1994. From 1997 to 2000, he worked as a lecturer and orthopaedic surgeon at the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, University of Malaya Medical Centre. He advanced his training in knee and shoulder surgery at various institutes in North America and completed a course in advanced arthroscopy at the famed Steadman and Hawkins Clinic in Vail, Colorado in August 1997. He then underwent a two-month attachment with Dr. David A McGuire, a dedicated knee arthroscopist and panel expert at the Arthroscopy Association of North America (AANA). In May 1998, Dr. TAY served as an AO International Fellow at the Sunnybrook Health Science Centre, Toronto, under the supervision of Professor Joseph Schatzker and later Dr. Anthony Miniachi, a dedicated shoulder arthroscopic surgeon. In 2003, he visited Dr. Joe De Beer at the Cape Shoulder Institute where he witnessed the treatment of South Africa’s national rugby players, the Springboks. In 2000 Dr. TAY left university practice and started his private practice at Gleneagles Intan Medical Centre. He specializes in various kinds of surgery for the knee, from minimal invasive surgery (arthroscopy) to more complex multiple ligament reconstructions as well as open surgery i.e. Total Knee Replacements. His current interest is in the treatment of articular injury of the knee. Dr. TAY is an active member of numerous Malaysian orthopaedic and medical associations and an affiliated member of the American Association of Orthopaedic Surgery (AAOS). He also works closely with many sporting bodies like the National Sports Council and the COBRA rugby team. In his leisure time, he plays competitive squash, tennis and badminton. He also enjoys golf and alpine skiing.

      After his primary education in Kota Baru, Kelantan, Dr. MERICAN attended the United World College of South East Asia (UWCSEA) in Singapore. He went on to study medicine in Dublin, Ireland and graduated from the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland in 1985. He returned to Malaysia in 1986 and began training in radiology at the University Hospital Kuala Lumpur in 1989. He obtained a Masters in Medicine (Radiology) from UKM and furthered his training at Queen’s Medical Centre in Nottingham, UK. In 1991, Dr. MERICAN obtained the Fellowship of the Royal College of Radiologists and served as state radiologist in Brunei from 1994 to 1996.

      In 1996 Dr. MERICAN returned to Kuala Lumpur and worked as a Consultant Radiologist at the Gleneagles Intan Medical Centre. Serving the many orthopaedic surgeons at Gleneagles he developed an interest in musculo-skeletal radiology, a sub-speciality that has grown rapidly in the last ten years due to the maturation of MRI technology and the development of high frequency ultrasound transducers. He has attended many courses, locally and abroad to further this interest and has visited luminaries in the field such as Dr. John Read in Sydney, Australia. He works closely with Dr. SAW and Dr. TAY in the arthroscopic correlation of radiological findings.

Demi usaha memperkasa kemahiran dan pengetahuan dalam bidang yang diminati, beliau mengikuti pelbagai kursus dalam dan luar negara di samping menemui dan menuntut ilmu daripada pakar seperti Dr. John Read di Sydney, Australia. Beliau bekerja rapat dengan Dr. SAW dan Dr. TAY dalam korelasi artroskopik terhadap sebarang penemuan berkaitan radiologi.

He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and the Royal College of Surgeons and Physicians of Glasgow, United Kingdom.

      Having completed his training in orthopaedic surgery, he then pursued his sub- specialization training in Hand and Reconstructive Microsurgery. This included training at the Department of Hand & Microsurgery at General Hospital Kuala Lumpur, University of Louisville & Christine M. Kleinert Institute for Hand & Microsurgery, Louisville, Kentucky, USA and Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, The Bowman Gray School of Medicine, Wake Forest University, Winston-Salem, North Carolina, USA. He received his Fellowship in Hand & Microsurgery from the University of Louisville and Christine M. Kleinert Institute for Hand & Microsurgery in 1996. During his training in USA he was involved in numerous research projects and scientific papers. He also authored chapters in the following books:

      Upon his return to Malaysia in 1996, Dr. GILL was appointed Consultant Hand Surgeon at the Department of Hand & Microsurgery, General Hospital Kuala Lumpur. He is also a Visiting Clinical Lecturer in Hand Surgery at the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia.

      He started his private practice in 1998 at Pantai Medical Centre and in 2003 set up Malaysia’s first Hand Unit in the private sector.       Sekembalinya ke Malaysia pada 1996, Dr. GILL dilantik sebagai Perunding Pakar Pemdedahan Tangan di Jabatan Tangan & Mikrosurgeri, Hospital Kuala Lumpur. Beliau juga seorang Pensyarah Lawatan Klinikal dalam Pembedahan Tangan di Jabatan Pembedahan Ortopedik, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia.

      • Fellowship-trained in UK on the treatment of foot and ankle deformities and injuries with various options ranging from orthotics to complex surgical procedures.
      Dr. LOW is the foot and ankle specialist at KLSMC. He obtained his medical degree from the National University of Singapore in 1988 and completed Orthopaedic postings at the National University Hospital and Alexandra Hospital before returning to Malaysia in 1996. He continued with his training in Hospital Kuala Lumpur and in 1999 was appointed as Orthopaedics and Traumatology Specialist at Hospital Kajang where he developed an interest in Foot and Ankle Surgery. In 2001, Dr. LOW visited the Harborview Medical Center, Seattle in the United States. He met internationally-renowned foot and ankle expert, Professor Sigvard Hansen, who introduced him to a wide variety of concepts and ideas regarding diseases of the foot and ankle. In 2004, Dr. LOW obtained a Foot and Ankle Fellow post at the Wirral Foot Unit in the United Kingdom. There, he trained to perform surgical corrections of various deformities of the foot and ankle. One of the many conditions he has learnt to treat is hallux valgus, commonly known as bunions, using the Scarf Osteotomy technique which has gained wide-spread popularity in many European countries. While working in the NHS, he gained substantial experience in dealing with foot and ankle problems. Dr. LOW is also actively involved in the training of local postgraduate students in foot and ankle surgery.

      Dr. Reza Ng Ching Soong who hails from Petaling Jaya, Selangor, received his education in medicine from Belgium. Upon completing his tertiary education, Dr. Reza pursued his medical degree in Belgium and came back to Malaysia 18 years later with a specialist degree in Orthopaedics. After 12 months of language classes, Dr. Reza is a fluent speaker of the Dutch language, which is a requirement for foreign students in Belgium. He later received his Bachelor of Medical Science (BMedSc) in 1993 from the Ghent State University. Following that, Dr. Reza moved to Brussels and to pursue his Medical Degree (MD) at the Free University of Brussels which he then graduated with distinction. Dr. Reza was offered a place to pursue a degree in Orthopaedic Surgery in Free University Brussels Hospital given his excellent academic results. During his Orthopaedic training he was assigned to different peripheral hospitals where he gained vast experience in Orthopaedic surgery. Among the hospitals were Brugmann Paediatric Hospital, the Burn Unit at the Military Hospital and Aalst State Hospital. Between his demanding working hours Dr. Reza devoted some of his time to attend French language lessons. In 2003 Dr. Reza graduated as an Orthopaedic Surgeon and is registered to the Belgian National Institute for Health and Invalidity. Dr. Reza’s pursuit for education continued when he went on to sub-specialize in shoulder and knee surgery at Onze Lieve Vrouw Hospital in Deurne, Antwerpen under the tutelage of Dr. Geert De Clercq for 2 years. At the same time, he was given the opportunity to work under Professor Marc Martens who is a world renowned Knee surgeon, especially in Europe. During an attachment programme, Dr. Reza spent 6 months with Dr. Van Melkebeek (Senior Consultant Hip Surgeon in OLVM hospital) to specialise in Hip Arthroplasty and Arthroscopy. He also spent time with Dr. Peter Campbell in Perth to learn more about Shoulder Arthroscopy and Arthroplasty. Dr. Reza returned to Malaysia in 2006 as an Orthopaedic Surgeon at Sungai Buloh Hospital until early 2010. During his tenure at Sungai Buloh Hospital, he headed the Sports Injury Unit and was also appointed as a National Trainer for Sports Injury Fellowship Programme by Ministry of Health. He is currently practising full time in Kuala Lumpur Sports Medicine Centre. Dr. Reza is also active in clinical research and has several international publications. Whenever he has the opportunity, he would participate at local and international meetings. Dr. Reza is affiliated to Belgian Orthopaedic Association, Malaysian Orthopaedic Association, AO Alumni, Belgian Student Alumni and Academy of Medicine Malaysia.

      Dr. Reza Ng Ching Soong yang berasal dari Petaling Jaya, Selangor, memperoleh pendidikan dalam perubatan dari negara Belgium. Sebaik menamatkan pengajian tinggi di Malaysia, Dr. Reza mengikuti kursus pengajian ijazah perubatan di Belgium dan hanya pulang ke tanah air 18 tahun selepas itu dengan membawa pulang ijazah kepakaran khusus dalam Ortopediks. Beliau fasih berbahasa Belanda selepas 12 bulan mengikuti kelas bahasa tersebut. Menguasai bahasa Belanda merupakan prasyarat bagi semua pelajar asing yang menuntut di Belgium. Beliau kemudiannya memperoleh Ijazah Sarjana Muda (Bachelor) Medical Science (BMedSc) pada 1993 daripada Ghent State University. Beliau kemudian berhijrah ke Brussels untuk mengikuti pengajian Sarjana Perubatan (MD) di Free University of Brussels dan berjaya memperoleh keputusan cemerlang. Disebabkan keputusan cemerlang pengajian akademiknya itu, Dr. Reza ditawarkan tempat bagi mengikuti pengajian ijazah Pembedahan Ortopedik di Free University Brussels Hospital. Ketika menimba latihan Ortopedik, beliau ditugaskan di beberapa hospital peripheral yang berbeza di mana beliau peroleh pengalaman yang luas dalam pembedahan Ortopedik. Antara hospital tersebut ialah Brugmann Paediatric Hospital, Unit Melecur (Burn) di Military Hospital dan Aalst State Hospital. Walau pun sibuk dengan tugasan hospital, Dr. Reza berkesempatan mengikuti kelas bahasa Perancis. Pada tahun 2003 Dr. Reza memperoleh kelulusan sebagai Pakar Bedah Ortopedik sekaligus berdaftar dengan Belgian National Institute for Health and Invalidity.
