After completing his medical schooling in Dublin, Ireland, Datuk Dr. Ryan completed his residency at the Cleveland Clinic foundation in Internal Medicine followed by a fellowship in Gastroenterology at the Scripps Clinic and Research Foundation in La Jolla, California. He is currently USA Board Certified in Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology. Datuk Dr. Ryan continued to further subspecialize in Interventional endoscopy at 2 world renowned centres, the Wellesley Hospital in Toronto, Canada and in Eppendorf, Hamburg. After completing this advanced training which included endoscopic ultrasound he returned in 2001 to Selayang Hospital, to pioneer the training of endoscopic Ultrasound in Malaysia.
Datuk Dr. Ryan remained in Selayang Hospital up to 2007, organizing live endoscopy courses locally and internationally. He has been invited as faculty for more than seventy live endoscopy courses around the world, ranging from India to Europe and the United States. He currently chairs the Asia Pacific task force in Endoscopic Ultrasound with the aim in increasing the level of endoscopic expertise in the region.
Datuk Dr. Ryan sits on editorial boards for academic journals and has published consensus guidelines and peer review articles. As his main expertise is in advanced endoscopy, his interest is pancreatico biliary medicine and early detection of pancreatic lesions.
